A small article in a 1929 newspaper tells of the dedication of a memorial in the Zion Methodist Church, Twerton. It commemorates just one casualty of the war, as well as the safe return of other members of the congregation.. The building in Twerton High Street is now no longer a church, but is used as offices and it is currently not known whether the memorial survives. From Bath Chronicle & Herald, 12th October 1929: ZION WAR MEMORIAL Unveiling Ceremony at Twerton "To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Sydney John Stebbings, who gave his life in the Great War 1914-1918. Also in gratitude for the return of our dear ones." The above was inscribed on a War Memorial tablet unveiled by Mr. Fred Lock at a special service at the Zion Methodist Church, Twerton, on Sunday at which the Rev. W. S. Green officiated. There was a large congregation. Mr A. Batt gave an address and sang a solo "The Upper Garden". The lesson was read by Mr. Fred Hudd. he hymns were "For All The Saints", "Theirs Are Names of Kings" and "Rock of Ages". Mr. S. Truckle was at the organ. The tablet is of oak, with the lettering in raised gilt. | ||
